Wayne Stokley”™s legacy lives on with launch of trail at Puslinch Community Centre

Wayne Stokley’s legacy lives on with  the naming of a local trail in his memory.

The trail, for which Stokley himself advocated, officially opened on June 7 as a commemorative marker was unveiled at the trailhead behind the Puslinch Community Centre.

On hand were family, friends, staff and political colleagues of Stokley who passed away in May 2016.

“It is wonderful to be here with Wayne’s family and many friends and colleagues,” said Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott.

“Wayne was an outstanding person in so many respects. We remember him fondly and miss him greatly. He made a great contribution and is well remembered by all of us.”

Arnott added, “It is very appropriate and fitting we are remembering Wayne with this trail. Wayne was promoting the trail from its beginning during his term on council.”

Puslinch Mayor Dennis Lever noted Wellington-Halton Hills MP Michael Chong was unable to attend, but sent a letter the mayor read to those gathered.

“An avid runner, Wayne would be pleased to see the trail enjoyed by walkers and runners alike,” wrote Chong, who commended all those involved in the planning of the project.

“Wayne’s legacy will live on for decades to come.”

Lever said, “Wayne envisioned this trail and often spoke about it … in fact, he reminded us about it on a very regular basis.”

Stokley often spoke on the importance of the trail in looking to the future of the property at the Puslinch Community Centre.

Lever noted “there was a number of us, including Stokley, who bushwhacked the trail.”

He added, “Wayne also wanted to ensure there was a lookout close to Mill Creek so that people could stop and enjoy the sounds and beauty of the surroundings.”

Lever said,  “if you haven’t already been for a walk on the trail, I encourage you to stop, listen to the sounds of the creek, look down into it, and see the fish that call it home. I’m sure Wayne would be very pleased if you did.”

Lever concluded “the trail will remind people of the importance of being outside, enjoying one’s surroundings, and letting the fast pace of life go on hold for just a little while.”
